What matters to me most about my childs' lives?

I want my children to be happy, healthy, challenged, curious, secure and at ease with themselves.

What drew me to Playborhood?

Playborhood founder Mike Lanza made contact with me after reading a post I wrote about play-friendly neighborhoods on the blog I write for online realtor Redfin.

My recommendations for other parents who want their child(s) to play more

Switch off the video games, TV and computer. Endure the moans, groans and melodrama that ensue. Introduce your kids to their street and neighbors. Walk everywhere you can. Take them on hikes (endure more gnashing of teeth). Play board games with them. Don’t fret about child abductors. Let them take risks.

My favorite childhood play memories

Putting on shows in our garage with my friends and inviting over neighborhood adults to watch the no doubt excruciatingly embarrassing results (we even had the cheek to sell them ice creams bought at our local gas station). Riding my bike with my friend Doug through the alleys and sidewalks of my neighborhood in Brussels, Belgium. Playing prison tag with our garage door as home base. Creating mud pie and cake stalls. Roaming around the construction sites of homes going up around our home with friends and having a brick fall on my head.
